TAMPA - Just before the 2010 Major League Baseball draft ended Wednesday, Matt Stallbaumer expressed his excitement about heading later that night to Brandon High's graduation.

The Eagles baseball coach couldn't wait to see if three of his departing players - catcher Roderick Shoulders, outfielder James Ramsay and shortstop Spencer Haynes - would be donning the caps of the major-league clubs that selected them in this year's draft.

Catalysts for a Brandon program that averaged nearly 20 wins per season over their prep careers, Ramsay (New York Yankees; 38th round); Haynes (Oakland; 43rd round) and Shoulders (Boston; 20th round) each had the honor of learning they were picked in the annual amateur draft; Ramsay and Haynes on Wednesday, following Tuesday draftee Shoulders. The senior trio gave the Eagles a county-high number of draft picks in 2010.

"It really is pretty cool for all three (to get picked), and it's well-deserved," Stallbaumer said. "They've been the backbone, for sure, the last four years at Brandon."

Brooks-DeBartolo and Jesuit joined Brandon as Hillsborough County programs to have multiple senior players drafted this year. Jesuit catcher Bobby Eveld was selected in the draft's 50th and final round by the New York Mets, joining ace left-handed pitcher Daniel Gibson, who was selected Tuesday by Milwaukee (26th round). Brooks-DeBartolo outfielder Kelvin Mention was taken in the 36th-round by Minnesota, the same team which selected his teammate, shortstop Jadamion Williams, in the 10th round Tuesday. That gives the two a chance to continue playing as teammates.

"I thought that was very interesting," said Phoenix coach Donnie Oliver, adding that he expects both players, along with Phoenix product and Tuesday draftee Reggie Williams Jr. (St. Louis; 10th round), to embark on a pro career. "I'm real happy for all three of them. They worked their tails off to get to this point and it paid off for them."

A fourth who played high school ball for Oliver, Freedom product Matt Campbell (Cincinnati; 43rd round), also was selected Wednesday. Campbell, a right-handed pitcher who earned his way onto the Florida Gators' roster this season after excelling for the university's club team in 2009, joined fellow Gators right-handed pitcher Tommy Toledo as a Wednesday draft pick. Toledo, a former Alonso standout, was the first player with local ties selected Wednesday, going in the 32nd round to Minnesota.

Tampa Catholic catcher Shane Rowland (Boston; 36th round), Robinson left-handed pitcher Chris Lee (Chicago White Sox; 37th round) and Cambridge Christian right-handed pitcher Peter Miller (New York Mets; 38th round) also were selected Wednesday, as was former Plant standout Dylan Brown (New York Mets; 37th round), an outfielder who played this past season at the University of Tampa.
